Tremadoc

Following the First World War, Coxon studied at Leeds College of Art and the Royal College of Art, where his contemporaries included Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). Together with Moore, Coxon founded the short-lived British Independent Society in 1927. Coxon's work ranged from sensitive portraits to non-representational paintings based on natural form. This painting offers a subjective, more expressive depiction of Tremadoc in Wales, exaggerating the dark forms and looming shadows of the hills to evoke an eerie and disquieting atmosphere.
