The Almond Tree

Bland painted landscapes and flowers in oil. She studied at London's Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks (1862-1937) and Fred Brown (1851-1941) and exhibited with the New English Art Club. Throughout the mid-1880s and 1890s the NEAC was dominated by Slade-trained artists. At this time, teaching at the Slade placed an emphasis on studying the effects of light, undermining the importance attached to subject matter. Painted during the 1920s, The Almond Tree reveals the strong influence that French Impressionism had on many British artists well into the twentieth century.
