The Enchanted Valley

Born in Hertfordshire, Chubb attended Cambridge University and then the Slade School of Art, where he gained the life painting prize. He went on to become a tutor of life drawing at St. Martin's School of Art. Chubb is best noted for his imaginative watercolours and illustrations. A poet as well as a painter, he described his works as having a 'visionary character' about them. The Enchanted Valley shows the impact that Post-Impressionism was having on many young English artists by the 1920s. The piece represents a general departure away from observation and academic realism, towards a more expressive and symbolic way of working. Although much 'tighter' in style, this painting bears some similarities to the landscape nudes of the German Expressionist, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938).
