An Algerian

Coutts specialised in painting portraits and figures. He exhibited at the Royal Academy as well as in Paris and went on to teach in Australia. Examples of his work can be found in the Sydney Museum, Australia. An Algerian was acquired following its entry in the 1922 Autumn Exhibition at the Victoria Galleries in Hull. It was shown at the Royal Academy the same year. The subject of this painting was probably a character who Coutts met during his varied travels.
