Untitled: Study of Ears 1980

This is a preparatory study that Newsome undertook for his major oil painting, 'Untitled: Nude', 1980-81. A comparison shows a close relationship exists between the two, providing a direct insight into the artist's working methods. Newsome turned from sculpture to painting in the 1970s, adopting a technique of precise draughtsmanship which emphasised his ongoing interests in the three-dimensional treatment of form. This drawing on squared paper illustrates this process.
