Jug, probably made in Hull, c.1801-1900

'John Elerthorp is my name, A ferry-man of noble fame.' This jug is painted with a poem about John Ellerthorpe Junior. John was a ferryman from Hessle who specialised in taking animals across the Humber. Cattle, horses and market goods were sailed across the river in great numbers. Long before the Humber Bridge, passengers were also ferried across on a regular basis.
