Grace Darling Staffordshire flatback pottery figure, c.1838-1900

The ship Forfarshire set off from Hull for Scotland in 1838. It never reached its destination. The Forfarshire was shipwrecked off the coast of Northumberland. William and Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper and his daughter, rowed into the storm to try to save the people on board. Grace and William knew they might not get back alive. They would need survivors to help them row their small boat back in the rough sea. After making two trips, 9 people were saved by their bravery. Unfortunately the remaining 43 crew members drowned.
