Porter's chair by Richardson & Sons, Hull (1885)

The roof on this chair was designed to protect the doorkeeper from the damp and cold. This job was originally done by a police constable who sat in the doorway of the old Town Hall making sure that only the right people were allowed inside. This chair may have been made when the doorkeeper complained about getting chilly. It was made 23 years after the Victorian Town Hall was built and furnished.
