Blackwall, looking towards Greenwich

Blackwall, looking towards Greenwich This painting is now known to be a copy by Ward of a painting of 1823 by William Anderson (1757-1837). Indeed, Ward made at least two copies of Anderson's scene. In this version, the foreground has been re-arranged, a buoy removed and a section of shore introduced to the right with two sailors who watch the scene. A favourite Ward device, these figures give perspective as well as colour and add interest to the river views he painted. The identification of this scene is made easy by the presence of the Royal Hospital, Greenwich, with its distinctive cupolas visible in the distance. Here Ward has created the characteristic sense of calm that typifies his work.
