Whalebone Garden Seat

This seat is made from real whalebone, probably from a whaling expedition. Different parts of the whale's skeleton have been used to make the bench. Its legs are each made from a single vertebrae piece. The back rest and arms are made from the whale's ribs, and discs from the vertabrae. The bench may have come from the garden of a whale ship owner or captain. The wooden seat and whalebone legs are carved with mysterious pictures. The meaning of some of these pictures has been lost over time.
