Sandspoor V

A co-founder of the Crypt Group, St. Ives, which later became the Penwith Society of Arts; Wynter began his artistic career as a landscape painter in a neo-romantic vein. After 1956 he moved from figurative to abstract painting, although even his most abstract works remain rooted in nature. The rhythmic, calligraphic brush strokes of Sandspoor V suggest a beach in summer marked by the action of the waves and tides. 'I think of my painting as a source of imagery, something that generates imagery rather contains it.'
